K. Flay brings the heat to Minneapolis with Denny and Houses at First Avenue

As I made my way to one of my most anticipated shows of the year, I couldn’t help but sweat in the summer heatwave hitting Minneapolis and be instantly brought back to an outstanding summer 2019 release. This past July, Bay Area artist K. Flay released her newest full length record “Solutions,” and a lot of the tracks on this record live and breathe good vibes and great grooves. As soon as K. Flay announced her fall tour in support of her newest release, I was left eagerly waiting in anticipation of her headlining show at First Avenue.

Opening the night was local Minnesota band Denny. I’m the first to admit I’m not good at checking out local acts before I see them live, but I like the fresh eyes and ears I give the bands this way. Right off the bat I was blown away with how comfortable and natural being on stage is for this band. Their sound was soulful and edgy, their stage presence was solid, and they had the crowd grooving along to their set. Denny definitely set the bar high for The rest of the night.

Next up was Chicago based artist Houses. Even though this was the second artist of the night I didn’t listen to before the show I was excited to see what this artist would bring to the stage. Houses immediately filled the venue with their relaxed, chill vibes getting the crowd gently swaying along to the sound of their music. Whereas Denny was more soulful and powerful musically, Houses was definitely more sonically atmospheric and proved to be able to fill First Avenue with summer vibes on the cusp of fall.

Last but certainly not least, headliner K. Flay took the stage amidst the cheers of the crowd, getting right into the first track off of Solutions for the night, “Not in California.” Honestly, I was expecting K. Flay to pull a good handful of songs off of her new album, but I was pleasantly surprised to witness a full play-through of “Solutions” on this tour. In an era where album anniversary shows are becoming standards, it was refreshing to see an album played recently after its release. As one of my most anticipated shows of the year, I was far from disappointed. K. Flay has a unique way of captivating the crowd and taking charge of the stage. The humbling and confident artist packs a punch with her live performance but does so with an infectious smile that is also present in the backing instrumentalists. K. Flay creates an effervescent aura with her music and performances that you can’t help but dance along with.
