Generationals kick off a short tour in support of “Reader as Detective” with shows this week in New York and Boston

New Orleans-natives and veteran indie rockers Generationals are back with a new album, “Reader as Detective,” and are about to embark on a short East Coast / Southern tour in support of it. The first shows are in Boston and New York, before heading south and eventually ending up at home at Tipitinas.

Though their retro vibe bears the influence of Phil Spector’s mid-century pop, Generationals’ sound is wide-ranging and diverse, incorporating elements of britpop, dance and electronic music. Above all, with each release the band continues zeroing in on their strong suit: superior pop songwriting.

Our last time seeing Generationals was way back in 2015 at the High Watt in Nashville, but they have been a steady force in indie rock for the past few years. The duo, consisting of Ted Joyner and Grant Widmer, released their debut album, Con Law, in July 2009 and now have six studio albums to date.

“Reader as Detective” was released in July on Polyvinyl. “Breaking Your Silence” is a stand-out track, evoking Foster The People (of course, Generationals had that sound long before “Pumped Up Kicks”). “I Turned My Back on the Written Word” has a similar playful vibe, with playful keys and drums, and is also worth a listen.
