Interview: Carlie Hanson on her upcoming tours, “Sierra Burgess is a Loser”, and moving to Seattle (maybe)

Carlie Hanson drips confidence. Her effortlessly cool demeanor naturally draws people’s attention. She’s incredibly herself for a young, budding pop sensation in the making. We were lucky enough to chat with Carlie before her set at Bumbershoot. She whispers “Hello, it’s Carlie.” as I slide the mic her way.

How is Seattle for you so far?
Seattle! I honestly think I want to move here. Because it’s kind of like Wisconsin, but much more city like. I went and looked at the water yesterday, saw the Kurt Cobain house. The whole vibe of the city is just way better than LA. I’m sick of LA now that I’ve seen this place.

It’s definitely a hub for artists. We have a great creative community here.
Yeah! I can tell by walking around that people are more expressive of who they are. And way nicer!

How has it been so far to just create?
It’s been a dream! It’s what I’ve always wanted to do any now I’m here doing a festival like this. I come from where I come from and I get to do this every day now. I don’t have to go to college like all my other friends, I get to make music. What more could I want?

How long have you been doing music for?
I’ve been singing constantly since I was little. I really got in to it once I heard Justin Bieber. I must have been about 9 when I heard him on the radio and then I watched all of his YouTube videos. It wasn’t even that I was obsessed with him. It was more like, “Wow! I want to do what he’s doing.” because he was so young and getting so much love. I just love music.

When was the first time you wrote a song?
I mean during class in middle school I would constantly be writing. They probably didn’t make any sense. My first actual song that I put on Soundcloud was in 2016.

What song do you love performing?
I really love “Only One” but I also love performing “Us”. It’s at the end of my set and it gets the crowd super pumped. I’m actually playing a new song today for the first time called “Toxins” and at rehearsal I had the most fun. It’s very guitary and I’m excited to bang my head!

You were featured on the soundtrack for ‘Sierra Burgess is a Loser’!
Yeah! I just saw the movie at the premiere. It’s so crazy that I’m part of the soundtrack for such a good movie. You have to watch it! All that kind of stuff doesn’t feel real to me. It can’t be a real thing, but here we are.

Are you working on anything?
Yes! I’m actually getting ready to put my EP out in the fall. Get ready for that!

You’re going on a road trip and your friends but you in charge of the playlist. What’s the first and last song you play?
Damn! I’m obsessed with this song called “Strawberries” by Kito. There’s a couple artists on it. It’s so good! Last one I would play would probably be a weird one. Something by Justin Bieber, like “One Time” or something.

Carlie is set to go on two tours; one with Jeremy Zucker and one with Troye Sivan. She is an artist you’ll need to keep your eyes on. You can listen to her music here.
