19-year-old King Princess captivates and enchants a sold out crowd at El Rey in Los Angeles (with Donna Missal)

Excitement filled the air. The sold-out El Rey, a live music venue set in an old movie theater in Los Angeles, was quickly filling up for King Princess’ Thursday night show. The royal red velvet décor and sparkling crystal chandeliers from the glory days of this vintage movie theater set the mood for the regal, precious performances to come. With her melodic, powerful voice and soulful songs, Donna Missal opened the night and had everyone dancing with her.

The moment 19-year-old King Princess took the stage, it was clear we would be among the last lucky few to experience her in such an intimate setting. She was effortlessly captivating, enchanting and authentic. It was difficult to look away. The room melted when she smiled and erupted with applause as she placed both hands on her hips, boldly striking poses.

Out went the lights.

They came back on a few moments later, enveloping King Princess and her keyboard in dim violet light as she opened her set with the moody “Make My Bed,” showcasing her raw, layered voice. As she switched over to guitar, King Princess was joined by her band for the rest of the upbeat set as they played hits from her self-produced debut EP – “1950,” “Talia” and “Upper West Side” – as well as several unreleased songs. The band’s energy had the room swaying and bouncing.

King Princess has become an integral part of the new wave of authentic artists such as Brockhampton, Troye Sivan and Hayley Kiyoko who confidently share music with stories of joy, frustration, disappointment, sexuality and love. Music and charisma have King Princess’ fans all over the world begging her to play in their cities.

The El Rey was packed with people who knew they were lucky to have her and they savored every moment. The crowd was electric and King Princess had everyone dancing, cheering, making out, and singing along to every word of her anthems. By the end of the night, King Princess felt like an old friend everyone was thrilled to have met. An old friend you can’t wait to see again before you even say goodbye.
