Chromeo brings funk to an intimate, energetic crowd at House of Blues Houston

If you believe that a two-man group couldn’t possess the talent to sing, dance, and play real instruments on stage, then you have probably never seen Chromeo in concert. Unlike most modern Dj’s, with their prerecorded tracks and auto tuned vocals, Chromeo brings a refreshing live musical performance that makes for some of the most danceable funk to come about since the dawn of Zapp and Roger.

The electro-funk duo is the invention of two Canadians, Patrick Gemayel and David Macklovitch, (better known as Pee Thug and Dave One), who decided to be the foremost sexy synth pop duo to ever grace hipsters’ turntables. Pee Thug plays keyboard, synthesizers, and uses a talk box for vocals, while Dave One plays guitar and commandeers lead vocals. The two are stylistically very different; Pee Thug rocked a bare-belly look with only a leather vest and gold chains, while Dave One kept it tidy with fitted leather and sunglasses. The melding of their aesthetic differences, however, makes for some of the best dance music in 2018.

Although the crowd was relatively small, I would attribute that more to the show falling on a Wednesday night than to the popularity of the group. There was still a great turnout of loyal fans who wore vintage Chromeo swag and boogied in what felt like some sort of 80’s dance party. If you ever have a chance to see this group, don’t miss out on the fun. Their fifth album Head Over Heels is scheduled to be released on June 15, 2018, so I predict many more shows in the future!
