Los Angeles enters emo wonderland as Thrice, Circa Survive, Balance and Composure and CHON play The Shrine

You know a show is going to be good when three out of four bands on the lineup are featured on Spotify’s Emo Forever playlist. Co-headliners Circa Survive and THRICE, alongside support acts Balance and Composure and CHON, brought the entire crowd to an emo wonderland on the first of two nights playing in Los Angeles.

Balance and Composure kicked off an early night with a short but sweet set that consisted of songs both new and old, leaving the audience chanting for “one more song” by the end of their five-song performance.

Just five minutes after, CHON followed up and proved that they’re the guitar band I didn’t know I needed in my life. Hailing from further down the coast in San Diego, their all-instrumental performance was a refreshing break from the crowd surfers and mosh pits that had begun to form.

Circa Survive is a name I hadn’t heard in years prior to this show, but having released The Amulet a little over a month ago, they’ve recaptured my attention once again. As the first headliner of the night, they opened up with “Rites of Investiture” and kept the energy level high with old favorites.

As more and more people began to fill the auditorium, THRICE took the stage and showed that they’re just as versatile as they are seasoned performers. Live, their music is consistent a blend of music that’s heavy enough to mosh to, but also includes the facet of classic rock. By the end of the show — were there to mosh, crowd surf, or just enjoy a night of music — not a soul left The Shrine auditorium disappointed.
