American folk and soul duo (and husband and wife) Johnnyswim welcome all of Chicago’s Vic Theatre into their family

There are no friends at a Johnnyswim show, just family; welcome everyone into our home” said Abner Ramirez as he raised a white ceramic mug into the air at their Friday nights sold out show in Chicago.

The married American folk and soul duo formed in 2005 and have since released three EP’s. Amanda Sudano and Abner Ramirez met in 2001 at a Sunday church service in Nashville, Tennessee, four years later Sudano decided to attend a songwriting workshop that Ramirez was teaching and became interested in writing songs with him. They married in 2009 and announced at one of their concerts in 2014 that they are expecting a child. Their son Joaquin was born the following year and is now along for the ride during his parents tour.

He is even featured at the end of one of the songs, “Touching Heaven”, on their latest EP. They arrived in Chicago just in time for the first snow, the photos of their son posted across social media that white morning could not have be more full of pure joy.

The Chicago show was intimate and drew everyone into their story and songs. The soft lighting and simple setup of a cow hide on the stage with two microphones gave the perfect setting a acoustic jam session. The crowd swayed, danced, and sang along to the choir during most of the show.

Toward the end of the show it was brought to Ramirez and Sudano’s attention that a newly engaged couple was sitting in the balcony so for a moment it was early May and Johnnyswim were singing at the couple’s wedding. The married duo put together an amazing set of song they are famous for, newer releases, and even a yet to be released song.
