Kali Uchis continues her first ever headlining tour with a stop at Oakland’s New Parish with Phony Ppl

Kali Uchis continued the start of her first headlining tour with a stop at The New Parish in Oakland, CA. Joining her on tour are Brooklyn based band, Phony Ppl who brought their jazzy, soulful R&B sounds to the stage to set the mood and get the crowd dancing and singing.

The start of the show came with unexpected delays. Ticket holders had been receiving emails all day from the shows promoter explaining that set times would have to be changed to accommodate a new early set time. This was initially due to Kali needing to leave the show early to catch a flight for “something special”. In the end, everyone had received one last email before the show to notify people that the show was going back to its original time, but would possibly be delayed. Both Phony Ppl and Kali Uchis explained to the audience that they had run into some problems on their way to Oakland and had to abandon their tour bus along with all their merch in the middle of nowhere. Unfortunately their bus driver had become really ill and had to be taken away in an ambulance.

Despite everything they had been through earlier in the day, they were all determined to put on a really great show no matter how tired they were. If they hadn’t told us they were tired, you wouldn’t have ever known cause it didn’t show at all. They both came out with an incredible amount of energy that made the small venue feel bigger than it really was. People that hadn’t been to a Kali Uchis show before, were surprised to see that Phony Ppl also double as her band. All the musician in Phony Ppl have a unique style of playing that happened to mesh really well with Kali Uchis’ latin tunes and style.

I had been able to catch Kali’s last show in San Francisco for her Outside Lands night show at the Rickshaw Stop and despite her set being a bit longer for that show, this one definitely had something about it that made it feel more intimate. She performed songs in both English and Spanish and had fans singing along even though a lot of them didn’t know what they were singing, but it was all in good fun. Because of her set being slighting shorter than the one at her previous show, she tried to make sure to throw in a little bit of everything into it. She sang a lot of her popular singles and threw in some covers of old songs you’d only hear your grandparent’s play if you grew up in a Latin household. It all brought back nostalgic feelings listening to her sing songs a lot of us probably hadn’t heard in years.

As she was closing her set, she promised fans that she would plan to make her way back to Oakland in the future for an extended amount of time and expressed her love for that city. As soon as the show was over, she exited the venue and quickly made it to the airport just in time to catch her flight for the special event she was very vague about.
