Deadmau5, The Chainsmokers and Martin Garrix Light Up Toronto at VELD Music Festival

There’s just something about Canadian festivals… In a time when it feels like the festival market is saturated, tired and overdone, festivals like Bestival, Osheaga and Veld continue to impress with their energetic crowds, stacked line-ups, and laid back vibe.

Veld Music Festival, a two-day EDM and hip-hop showcase that takes place every summer in Toronto’s Downsview Park pulled in The Chainsmokers, Martin Garrix, Flume, Kygo and Deadmau5. The highlight for many fans was Deadmau5, who grew up and now lives near Toronto, and rose to fame in the Ontario club scene. He also co-produces the festival and used it to debut his new, $2 million Cube 2.0 set up. It was one of Deadmau5’s first appearances in a while, and an exciting surprise for fans who thought the producer might be waiting until Tomorrowland in Belgium to debut the new stage set-up. The set teased classic tracks like “Ghosts N Stuff” and “The Veldt,” but mostly featured deeper bits of Deadmau5’s discography.

The Chainsmokers were another huge grab as they are arguably one of the hottest acts this summer with tracks like “Roses” and most recently “Closer” topping international charts. Flume also has new music that was debuted, and Martin Garrix always puts on a hit-heavy, upbeat set. On the hip-hop side, Travis Scott’s set was cancelled but other hot acts like Post Malone did their best to make up lost ground.

Of course, EDM festivals are hardly just about the music, and VELD and its attendees never fail to impress with their extravagant costumes and outgoing attitudes. The festival was dusty and sunny, but neither proved an obstacle for swarms of dancing ravers. Our full photo gallery is available on our Facebook page.
